Jimmy Carter's Funeral: A tribute to a legacy of Compassion

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the U.S. and the longest-lived president, died peacefully at age 100, on Dec. 9, 2024, surrounded by his family. The American flag flies at half-staff for 30 days to recognize the death of a president or former president. He is survived by his three children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Jimmy Carter achieved major success over the course of his lifetime but received criticism during his four-year term. After his presidency, in 1982, he founded the non-profit The Carter Center in Atlanta with his wife Rosalynn Carter, addressing important public policy issues, promoting democracy, protecting human rights, and preventing diseases like the Guinea Worm. For his dedication, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.  Rosalynn Carter died at the age of 96 in 2023 after 77 years of marriage. They had known each other since their childhood and worked together at the Carter Center for as long as they could. Both were honored at the Carter Center prior to burial in the town of Plains, Ga.
