Ruben Sands has been an integral part of the sidelines of Marietta High School football since 1977, helping the program grow over nearly five decades. As a little boy, Sands loved to attend the games, but tickets were hard to come by. Therefore, by participating in the program, he could go to the games while having a place on the football team. Sands has garnered a wealth of knowledge and expertise while working with the program, embracing the team’s ideals and history. He is the epitome of Marietta football, and his kind-hearted spirit and passion for the game have helped to shape the program.“It’s been very fun, with five different head coaches and four different athletic directors, I’m glad to be a part of it,” said Ruben Sands.
Sands, who graduated from Marietta High School, immediately took on the role of team manager early into his high school career. Despite never having played, he was eager to be the manager. With Sands concentrating on the team’s internal operations, his dedication and unwavering work ethic promptly rendered him an asset to the team.
“I mainly set up the field, change out the game balls, and fix equipment on the sidelines, all while being a part of so many great seasons,” said Sands.
He has contributed to many successful seasons, but none more so than the season of 2019 when Marietta took home the state title. He also cherishes the memories of working side-by-side with his friend and mentor, Coach James “Friday” Richards, who sadly passed away in 2018. Over the years, he has won the reverence and affection of players, coaches, and the Marietta community. Many former coaches and athletes credit their success to his hard work and constant support.
“I can’t remember a time when Ruben was not on the sidelines. He is one of the most loyal Blue Devils that I’ve ever been associated with. He’s consistently taken care of the student-athletes and facility for decades,” said Paul Hall, Marietta’s former Coach and Athletic Director.
Sands’ induction into the Hall of Fame and being presented with the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s (GACU) Beverly Sanders Raines Award, along with numerous other Cobb County honors, are two of the most fulfilling parts of his long-term involvement with Marietta Football. The Beverly Sanders Raines Award is given to someone who has significantly contributed to the advancement of their school’s athletes, community, and state of Georgia in line with GACU’s ideals; someone just like Sands. Beyond that, his enthusiasm for the game and the team has created a sense of unity and purpose that extends beyond the physical aspects of football. His story demonstrates the power of determination, passion, and the unsung individuals who make achievement possible. Marietta is fortunate to have Sands on the sidelines and leading those who follow him toward success.
