How to stay sane in political uncertainty

Despite the claims of  Francis Fukuyama, history is happening, and the post USSR liberal democratic status quo is shifting, making way for an era rife with political extremism and the rise of authoritarian regimes. UN rule of law is flagrantly ignored and powerful militant states invade and conquer less powerful countries in a manner reminiscent of pre-WW2 might-makes-right diplomacy. The Epstein files reveal to the world the depravity secretly fostered by the people who run our world. The old world order is shifting, so how do you stay sane?

Limit your news intake

Staying informed is important, but remember that news organizations make more money if you are anxious and hooked on the flow of bad news they feed you. News stories about good things happening don’t get clicks. War cooling and crime decreasing don’t sell subscriptions. The news is will sell you a grim view of the world. The same goes for social media. Algorithms are designed to keep you hooked on the flow of bad news and dangerous misinformation. Regulate your screen time and make sure to double check information you get from social media.

Organize in your community

Search for established humanitarian or political groups in your area. You alone may not be able to stop all of the bad things happening in our world, but you can make noticeable impacts in your area. Just you and a small group of people can organize and build positive change in your community. All you need is dedication and passionate people to make the grass greener for everyone around you. You are not helpless to make the world a happier place.

Find a productive hobby

This is good advice in general, but especially so for keeping oneself focused and busy on things that make you happy rather than dwelling on events far beyond your grasp. Find hobbies where you can form connections with others and remain physically active. Build skills and community, make yourself and those around you happy. Better yourself if you cannot better the world or your community.

Ultimately, remember this one thing: The world trends towards progress. As time goes on, the world tends to get materially better for the average person. There are always going to be bad times, but as history shows, better times are sure to arise in response. Do not lose hope for a more harmonious future and do not stop fighting tooth and nail for it. Apathy and despondence are the only things capable of stopping us from grasping the future we all deserve.
