In the past year, many of the biggest releases in 2025 sparked conversations about representation, nostalgia and what to expect from new franchises.
Captain America: Brave New World, Released Feb. 14. 2025
This movie follows Sam Wilson as he steps into the role of Captain America focusing on new threats and what it means to carry the shield. Sam is trying to prove himself while dealing with pressure from the enemies and public. This movie mattered because it showed a shift in the Marvel universe. People were watching to see how the new Captain America (Anthony Mackie) would be received and reactions were everywhere. People who said they were “over Marvel” talked about it.
A Minecraft Movie, Released April 4, 2025
A fantasy and adventure film based on the video game starring Jason Momoa (Garrett Garrison) and Jack Black (Steve) who help four outsiders from Idaho get back home after being pulled into the world. Minecraft has been part of most teens childhoods so the movie became a huge nostalgia moment. People debated whether it was good or cringe. A lot of hype surrounded the movie and clips and memes spread fast online like chicken jockey.
Sinners, Released April 18, 2025
A horror film directed by Ryan Coogler starring Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers (Stack and Smoke) in the 1930 Mississippi Delta who encounter a supernatural evil being. This one is a must. Sinners stood out because it mixed horror, history and social criticism in a way people weren’t expecting. It sarked debates online and tons of reaction videos. People talked about what the deeper meaning behind it was.
How to Train Your Dragon (Live Action), Released June 13, 2025
A young Viking who befriends a dragon naming it toothless. The live action making of how to train your dragon drew attention because of how loved the animated films are. Fans often compared the live action version to the original. Nostalgia played a huge role in its popularity. Some loved seeing the story again while others thought it didn’t need a remake at all.
KPop Demon Hunters, Released June 20, 2025
A K-Pop girl group that secretly hunts demons facing off against a rival demon boy band. This movie gained attention because it combined K-Pop with action which in a way felt new and different. Fans of K-Pop were excited about the visuals and music. It spread quickly on social media through clips which helped bring in audiences that don’t usually watch or listen to K-Pop.
Superman, Released July 11, 2025
A reboot of the DC superhero franchise. Superman faces consequences after he intervenes in a conflict by Lex Luthor. Audiences were curious to see how the character would be reintroduced to the younger generations. The film sparked conversations about what people expect from superheroes now than the past.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Released July 25, 2025
Marvel studios film that introduces the superhero family to the MCU in a retro setting. Marvels The Fantastic Four was one of the most anticipated releases of 2025. Fans plaid close fans paid close attention to casting, story direction and how the film would fit into the marvel universe.
Weapons, Released Aug. 8, 2025
In a classroom where all but one child mysteriously vanish at the same time prompting an investigation into what happened. Weapons stood out because it wasn’t your typical horror movie it was more intense and darker. People talked about it because it left a lot open to think about which led to theories and discussions online. Some viewers thought it was disturbing.
Wicked: Part two, Released Nov. 21, 2025
Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship is being tested by opposing roles in Oz with Elphaba becoming the wicked witch and Glinda the popular icon leading to a final confrontation that will change them and Oz forever. Wicked: part two was everywhere when it came out. Pink and green that is all you would see. People loved it and argued about it, everyone was talking about wicked. The soundtrack and visuals took over social media and theaters. It also pulled in both longtime Broadway fans and teens.
Avatar: Fire and Ash, Released Dec. 19, 2025
Jake sully and his family as the confront a new and aggressive Na’vi tribe called “Ash people” and the human RDA forces focusing on themes of family, grief and survival. Even before release Avatar 3 felt like a huge event. The anticipation made it a big topic. People talked about the visuals and how its better to see movies on the big screen.
Marty Supreme, Released Dec. 25, 2025
Starring Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser an ambitious table tennis hustler using his magnetic personality who pursues greatness at any cost leading him to a world championship in the end. Marty Supreme stood out in 2025 because it blended humor, chaos and real moments in a way that some may felt very connected too. The movie became popular not just because of the story but because of the marketing. Some people loved its unpredictable energy while others didn’t get the hype.
