The month of Sep. 15 to Oct. 15 honors Hispanic and Brazilian Heritage Month and celebrates the histories and cultures of these communities. The week-long celebration began in 1968 and expanded to a month in 1988 by President Reagan. The dates align intentionally with many Hispanic and Latino countries’ anniversaries of independence.
“I think it is important for the students to be able to see someone like them being celebrated and acknowleged,” Mrs. Melanie Angeles, front office clerk said. “It’s also really great for them to be able to look up to someone for their future.”
At Marietta High, the piñata event kicked off the month’s festivities, followed by dress up theme days such as “vaquero,” jersey, and traditional clothing. The morning music playing at 7:40 a.m. featured Latin and Brazilian artists all month. The celebrations conclude today with a staff Latin luncheon. Students involved in HOPE, Hispanic Organization Promoting Education, helped to lead and organize events including agua frescas fundraisers and prepping a homecoming float. On Oct. 3, student performances in the Hispanic and Brazilian Heritage assembly showcased different cultural traditions from clothing to music and dance.
“I’m so proud of the HOPE students. They have been planning since school started,” Mrs. Milly Gorman, college adviser and HOPE sponsor, said. “They have had so many dance practices. It was really student led.”
